This master’s thesis opportunity invites you to delve deeply into the evolving realm of cloud services, particularly the shift towards short-lived computing instances such as Container as a Service (CaaS) and Function as a Service (FaaS).
You will be at the forefront of examining how these innovations support the rise of new market players utilizing volatile, renewable energy-dependent resources. This research is pivotal in the context of increasing computing demands driven by IoT and AI technologies.

Deine neuen Herausforderungen:
Within this thesis a suitable pricing model for such short-lived services shall be developed. As a first step a literature study on existing pricing models for cloud services in general and for container-type of services in particular shall be conducted. The outcome of this study should be a selection of a suitable base model for further refinement.
The next step shall be the identification of the footprint of short-lived services in the cloud service portfolio of incumbent providers. This analysis shall also yield the timely usage distribution of short-lived services throughout the day and a prediction of the growth of the service footprint for the future.
The analysis can use among others the following resources:
- Traces of Alibaba cloud services utilization
- Traces of Microsoft Azure cloud services utilization
- Traces of Huawei cloud services utilization
- For historic evolution: older traces of google cloud service utilization
In a parallel analysis the price evolution of incumbent providers shall give some insight in the users’ willingness to pay. For this analysis the current and historic prices of two incumbent cloud service providers, e.g. Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, can be used.
The results of the analysis phase will give insight into:
- the current and future market potential of short-lived services
- the suspected competitive landscape and the possible dominance of incumbents
- the willingness to pay of users
- the opportunity window for new market entrants
